Morganton

Well I just got back from the Morganton Sectional/District 7 GNT finals. We had a pretty good weekend. There were 12 teams from across District 7 competing for the right to represent our District in the National GNTs, which will be held just prior to the Summer Nationals in New Orleans. There was a Swiss teams held on Saturday that would qualify 4 teams for knockouts on Sunday. With one round to go, our fate was in our hands. If we won the last match, we were sure to qualify for Sunday. If we lost, it would be a long drive back home.

Well we played well and won.  On Sunday, in the semi finals, we faced a good team from Western North Carolina. The match came down to a single hand. Our opponents had this auction:

West                North               East                 South

                                                                        2 Diamond

Pass                2 NT                  Pass                  3 Club

Pass                6 Diamond                  Pass                   Pass

Pass

2 NT was a Modified Ogust and 3 Club denied any feature.

I was on lead with Spade743 Heart82 DiamondA873 ClubKJ73

With bad holdings in the majors I expected a running suit or possibly even two in dummy. Needing to establish a trick to go with my trump Ace, I led a low club. Our opponents were down 1 when partner was nice enough to hold the ClubQ.

We held on in the finals and hope to do well in New Orleans. This is a team event, so let me thank my partner Mike Kovacich and teammates Jeni and Tom Carmichael for the great results they put up all week.
